Born on 9 February 1947, Yves Cali is a Maltese artist and designer whose creativity is deeply rooted in a distinguished artistic lineage. In 1987, he designed Malta's present Coat of Arms, together with the President's Flag and the Maritime Flag'symbols that continue to represent the nation's identity. He also created the illustrated booklet marking Malta's entry into the European Union, followed by a similar commission for Lithuania. Cali took up oil painting about twenty years ago, focusing primarily on landscapes. A self-taught artist, he believes that art comes naturally to him, an inheritance embedded in his family's history. On his father's side, he descends from the celebrated painter Giuseppe Cali, his great-grandfather, as well as from Ramiro Cali and Maria Cali Corleo, his grandparents. His father, Carlo, and uncle, Guido, were also talented painters, with Carlo designing the 1964 Independence Coat of Arms.
On his mother's side, Yves proudly traces his heritage to Giovanni Schranz, his great-great-great-grandfather, whose works, alongside those of Giuseppe Cali, are displayed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta, testifying to a family legacy of enduring artistic excellence.
