Zepp Cassar is an internationally acclaimed Maltese-born artist known for his abstract, figurative, and landscape paintings. Dividing his time between Sydney, France, China, and Malta, he works as a self-taught outsider artist who embraces experimentation and instinct over formal methods. His art often drifts into quiet, dreamlike spaces where imagination intersects with lived experience. Zepp's early years in Malta deeply shaped his creative path. Inspired by the island's Phoenician heritage and the rhythmic patterns of the Temple of Fertility, he developed a fascination with texture and movement. Childhood memories of colourful village festas, energetic bands, and ornate streets fostered his enduring love of vibrant palettes and bold expression. After moving to Australia 36 years ago, Zepp encountered a vast new landscape and culture. Sydney's sharp, vivid light expanded his visual language, influencing both his personal practice and his work with special-needs students, whose unconventional perspectives resonate with his own. He paints spontaneously, often using recycled materials to create dynamic, free-flowing works that reflect curiosity, emotion, and instinct.
