Description:

Matthew Kassar (b. 1968) began studying art at an early age at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufacture & Commerce, then trained under Alfred Chircop at 6th Form Msida. He was awarded a four-year diploma in painting from the Malta School of Arts under Harry Alden, Charles Cassar and Joseph L. Mallia, and later completed a ceramics course at Targa Gap. Kassar also studied with Roberto Cippolone at La Bottega in Florence. He has held various solo exhibitions and taken part in many collective exhibitions both locally and abroad. ˜In his artistic voyage, Matthew interprets his paintings with great sensitivity and sensibility. His technique creates sculptural illusions as he intermingles painting and collage to produce unique effects. The use of gesso, pencil, varnish, paint and sand gives a distinctive texture, forming clear and acute subjects, some geometric and some figurative. His works present the viewer with an illusion of form and volume. Subjects vary from churches, chapels, portals, balconies, still lifes, figures, and cityscapes. Through his creative spirit, Matthew transforms ordinary objects into living scenes, producing a dreamy atmosphere of serenity, peace, and tranquillity.˜
