Aged fourteen, he sustained a spinal-cord injury that left him permanently wheelchair-bound. During his rehabilitation, painting was introduced to him as part of occupational therapy - a practical exercise that quickly revealed itself to be much more. Through art, Tonio found not only a form of creative expression, but also a means to rebuild confidence, purpose, and self-worth within society. For thirty-four years he served in the public sector, balancing work with a quiet but enduring commitment to personal creativity. Upon retiring, he returned fully to painting, this time as a self-taught artist, developing his own visual language with renewed dedication. His works reflect resilience, introspection, and a profound appreciation for the act of making art as both discipline and liberation.
