Description:

Charles Bonnici (1949?2020) was a Maltese sculptor whose expressive limestone works captured emotion and movement through semi-abstract human forms. His figures - dancing, loving, conversing - evoke the subtleties of human connection and reflection. In his first major solo exhibition, Emotions in Stone (Malta Society of Arts, Palazzo de La Salle, Valletta, 27 February, 20 March 2009), Bonnici presented fifty sculptures created within a year, exploring the breadth of human experience. Central to his oeuvre was the Mother and Child theme, symbolizing the purity of first love and the enduring bond between two beings. A long-standing member of the Malta Society of Arts, Bonnici also taught stone sculpture at Palazzo de La Salle and exhibited widely in collective shows. Born in Malta and raised in the United States, he studied at the Art and Design School and the Rich View School of Sculpture in New York. Remembered for his humility and passion, Bonnici's art continues to celebrate the resilience of the human spirit.
