Published: December 11, 2024 7:57 pm Catherine Cavallo is a well-known contemporary painter who lives and works in Malta. An accomplished and fully trained artist, Catherine earned a 1st Class Honours diploma from The City and Guilds of London School of Art, finding inspiration both in the UK where she honed her figurative work, and then in Italy where her love for landscape painting was born, before returning to her home here in Malta. She is also the recipient of various awards and accolades.
Based in St. Paul’s Bay, her work is rooted in observations of the everyday and inspired by the pockets of serenity she looks for amidst the upheavals that life presents. Her love of the outdoors is evident in her land and sea scapes, powerful subjects and evocative figurative compositions.
The figurative works are results of observing life around her, both superficially and in great depth. She moves seamlessly between depicting ‘Early Morning Pastizzi at Crystal Palace’, to expressing the plight of refugees, especially the children. Her ideas are mostly influenced by life in Malta, but also inspired by current world situations. These figurative works are time-consuming and demanding, so she intersperses them with scapes, and works in mixed medium. Her preferred method is working with oils, applied with the palette knife.
The last few years have seen the artist’s work spill over into the abstract, exploring with the merging of the abstract and the figurative.
