Published: December 13, 2025 9:51 am John Martin Borg took up watercolour painting after graduating in pharmacy from the University of Malta in 1977, exhibiting his first pieces in 1979. Since then, his paintings have gained recognition both locally and internationally. Borg's art is eclectic, drawing inspiration from varied sources and imbuing his creations with a deep fascination for both the sea and the countryside. Growing up near Ta' Xbiex, he developed a profound connection with seafaring life, while the subtle moods of the countryside inform his sensitivity to nature's nuances. A master of plein-air painting, he often ventures out at dawn, carrying his easel, brushes, paper, and paints, capturing fleeting light and seasonal shifts. Autumn, with its cloudy skies and fresh grass, particularly inspires him, bringing his artistic vision vividly to life. Even after decades of painting, Borg continues to experiment, exploring new techniques and visual possibilities. As the artist observes, this piece depicts an angel, concealed as a pilgrim, suggested by his greenish overcoat. In one hand he holds a staff; in the other, a flame, both iconic symbols of angels. The flame represents the grace and spiritual warmth angels bring into our lives.
