From an early age, he demonstrated a strong inclination toward sculpture and design, leading him to pursue formal artistic studies under Mons. Michelangelo Apap (1915-2006), one of Malta's foremost ecclesiastical artists. He later refined his craft in wood sculpture under the celebrated Maltese sculptor Anton Agius (1933-2008), further developing his expressive approach to form and material. Working primarily in wood and stone, Mario Agius emphasizes organic textures and natural contours, allowing his figures and abstractions to convey emotional depth and quiet introspection. His works often explore themes of identity, spirituality and the dignity of everyday life.
