Description:

Maltese artist, tutor and graphic designer Doranne Alden was first inspired to follow an art career by her father, veteran water-colourist Albert J. Caruana. She attended the School of Art under the guidance of Joseph L. Mallia, but is otherwise self-taught. Doranne went into employment immediately after art school as a trainee with a local advertising agency. There, she gained experience in graphic design and compiled a portfolio that landed her a designer job with a bigger agency. During the 1980s she worked for several major advertising agencies, eventually venturing out to set up her own agency with a friend. In tandem, she also worked as a freelance designer and professional artist, creating Malta-themed postcards, posters, and calendars. Her preferred painting medium has constantly been water-colour and she enjoys working on various subjects. However, she predominantly paints still life, landscapes, and family scenes. A move to Germany lasting nearly eight years, offered her the opportunity to hold a series of drawing and water-colour classes for adults, join an abstract artists group and participate in several solos and collectives in Germany and in Austria. Upon returning to Malta, Doranne continued exhibiting with regularity, both as a solo artist and by participating in collectives. Today her works form part of several private collections in Malta and abroad, including the Munich International School in Bavaria. Over the past 20 years, Doranne has been a professional art tutor in Tuscany, Italy as well as organising painting holidays and art workshops on the island of Gozo. Recently Doranne and her father were featured in ‘Two Generations of Maltese Artistic Families’, a prestigious art publication sponsored by a leading Maltese bank.
