Description:
Debbie Caruana Dingli ( born 1962) comes from a distinguished artistic family that includes her great uncle Edward and her grandfather Robert.
She inherited a gift for portraiture from Edward and a humorous streak from Robert. Her first exhibition was a set of watercolours at the Museum of Fine Arts in 1985. Her self portrait, aged 23, is hanging at MUZA. Debbie has painted an extensive collection of portraits in both watercolour and oils but shows a great interest in social commentary.
She uses a cartoon style to express her thoughts on human interaction, migration, environmental topics, animal welfare, unfortunate circumstances such as mothers of criminals and recently the more humorous 'Us, Maltese'. In 2015, Bank of Valletta held a retrospective of her work, after 30 years of painting professionally.
The following year Debbie had a bad car accident. She could not paint but used her left hand to paint an introspective set of self portraits, 'Facing Myself'.
Debbie taught watercolours and oils for some ten years but is now concentrating on her future work.
