I was born in 1946, in Valletta, and studied art at a young age but remained dormant for many years. It resurfaced twenty-four years ago when I returned to the School of Arts in 2000. I furthered my studies, for seven years, under the direction of the late Harry Alden. Colour is the dominant and forceful characteristic of my works. I produced three solo exhibitions and participated in various collective exhibitions. My preferred medium is oil. Most of my works are either at local institutions or private collections. Others can be found in Canada, France, Italy, Russia, United Kingdom, Australia and USA. One can view my works at www.frederickgingell.com. The painting being exhibited, ‘L-imqarqac tar raħal u sħabu’, is an expression of my youth. The setting is in a village but could easily be a city. A group of friends run wild, having fun in the rain while teasing one another. ‘L-imqarqac’ swings his umbrella while his friends dodge from being hit. But the glasses of one guy flew off his face. He happens to be very short sighted and has to go down on his knees to find them. This used to happen to a classmate when we played roughly with each other. I completed this painting specifically for the Dar tal-Providenza Auction 2025.
