Published: December 13, 2025 9:51 am Lawrence's artistic practice emerges from a sustained attention to the landscape, environment and cultural texture of the Maltese Islands. Although he began to explore art in his thirties, his work took on a deeper direction in 2006 when he joined a University of Malta studio course under Prof. Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci, later continuing his development with Harry Alden, Anthony Calleja and George Muscat. These formative encounters shaped a visual language grounded in clear structural forms, strong chromatic contrasts and a sensitivity to place. His landscapes and streetscapes are recognisable for their hard-edge approach and vibrant colour fields, translating familiar local scenes into compositions that feel at once rooted and re-imagined. Lawrence approaches the environment not only as subject matter but as a site of concern. His recent BajtARTax-xewk series, created using prickly pear leaves, responds directly to Malta?s ecological degradation, transforming an everyday organic element into a charged artistic statement.
Alongside these works, Lawrence continues to experiment with pop-inspired portraiture, abstraction, lino-prints and objet-trouv. He has held three solo exhibitions and participated in several collective exhibitions, steadily refining a voice that is both personal and resonant.
